Following the announcement of an impending phone ban earlier this school year due to excessive phone use, both students and staff have been awaiting details on how it will be implemented. In homebase this Tuesday, this information was finally revealed over zoom. Hamilton High School’s Principal Ms Baxter gave insight about the policy expected to be enforced next semester, announcing that phones may not be used during school hours – including nutrition and lunch. “The policy also applies to devices that provide similar functionality to a smartphone, such as a smart watch, earbud and smart glasses,” Ms. Baxter said. Leading into the excessive use of the technology, it is also said by the principal that there’s going to be warnings for those who don’t follow the policy beginning with a verbal warning and escalating to a phone call home or having your phone stored in the Main Office’s safe to be picked up at the end of the day or by a guardian.
This will be done using Yondr Pouches that will be initially unlocked, allowing students to retain access to their phone in case of emergency. However, Ms. Baxter warned that those found using their phone irresponsibly may have their pouch locked on a daily basis. “If you become agitated or anything like that, there will be further consequences,” she said. Students will be responsible for keeping up with their pouch and will be financially liable if it is damaged. As this is a districtwide policy, many schools have already started this and claim students’ focus has improved. Students, however, have varying opinions on this.
“It’s not going to make too much of a difference.” said AMPA junior Saryii Gee, “We are always going to find a way [to use our phones].”
On the other hand, SAS freshman Paulina Hernandez, says, “I think the phone ban will help me because I will concentrate more in my classes and pay attention with no distractions. I will also be able to socialize with people more.”
Another student Mj Alexander said it could be a safety concern.
As issues arise, Ms. Baxter has assured that feedback is being given to the district by ASB. Additionally, she announced that plans are being discussed to accommodate seniors who have a lunch pass so that they can use their phones while off campus.
