SAS senior Karen Cruz Hernandez has been a member of the Latino Student Organization since her freshman year. As she participated in her final La.S.O. show, she said she felt happy and joyful.“I enjoy seeing the audience’s reactions and being happy, and just having a good time on stage, having everyone cheering us on,” Karen said.
On Friday night, the La.S.O. Club presented “El Festival Cultural De Latino America” to families and students here at Hami. The show introduced dances from many different regions, such as Zacatecas, Salvador, Chiapas, as well as a variety of styles of dancing, like salsa, samba and punta. Students also presented poems, speeches and many more cultural arts from countries including Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, and Nicaragua.
Hamilton’s talented mariachis opened the show with “El Herradero” and closed it with “La Charreada.” They had many cheers from the audience and made the night spectacular. Everyone wanted them to play an extra piece.
Ashley Garcia, the La.S.O. president and a senior in SAS, said to her, this performance was important, special, and emotional.
“It was such an honor to be part of this for four years, it meant a lot to me,” Ashley said. “These La.S.O. shows were so close to me and it hurts to leave, but I’m so glad that I got to be part of this and I hope it keeps going.”
Ashley said she not only enjoyed the show but the whole experience of performing.
“Getting ready backstage, we spend time with our friends and getting ready, we find the rhythm,” she said.
Karen said she is happy to see the club continuing to grow.
“Seeing more people involved is really fascinating and honestly this was a great show to end off my high school,” Karen said.
