In life, we unfortunately don’t always get what we want. But then again, sometimes we do. Yes, this is a noticeable occurrence but it’s true. Sometimes not attaining your desires (depending on what they are) is a good thing. While being on the journey of chasing your goals, one thing to remember is to always advocate for yourself! Whether you attain those goals or not, it’s a lesson either way. It just proves that no matter how hard you work, or how long you cry, some things are just out of your control. And that’s okay.
Let’s focus on the importance of advocating in school as a student.
When in school, especially high school & college, self-advocating is probably the most important habit to develop. Now, if you’re like me and have a hard time speaking up, that’s okay. At times, asking for help can be hard. Whether you’re an over-thinker or just naturally shy, it’s an uncomfortable position. Here’s some tips that I’ve found helpful when asking for help!
_____
1) Be confident in yourself
When speaking (even if you’re not asking for help), confidence is key. It doesn’t matter if you have an A or F in the class. Doesn’t matter if you have a little or a lot of understanding regarding the assignments, be confident in knowing that you’re getting the extra support to help guide you through the process.
2) Don’t overthink it!
I know that’s very vague, but hear me out. When you overthink the situation, you’re too focused on all the negative possibilities that could transpire rather than the main goal. Try focusing on the positive outcome, that you’re finally gonna understand that assignment or whatever the case may be.
3) DIY
In reality, not everyone is going to say “yes.” As unfortunate as it is, it’s also a reminder that sometimes we just have to do it ourselves. That being said, try outsourcing for as many different types of help as you can. That could be YouTube, another teacher, a peer, etc. There are always available options, some of which require your voice.
At the end of the day, in order to get help it starts with you. Whatever your need may be, the motivation must come from you. You utilizing your voice to advocate for yourself is just as important as you utilizing your hands to write an essay.
You can make it happen, all you need is your voice.
