Hamilton is a fairly diverse school with people from many different classes, ethnic groups, and backgrounds. With a school as diverse as this, they must have varying and complex views about one of the world’s most important concepts—money—right? In order to fulfill my curiosity, I asked a few people their opinions on money through three primary questions:
- If you suddenly got one billion dollars, what would you buy?
- Do you think money would change the way you interact with people?
- What would you do if after a year of living like that you woke up dirt poor?
“I’d probably invest in stocks and then donate the rest to charity because I don’t really think I’d know what to do with that much money,” said SAS freshman Sebastian Williams. “I might buy a car or something, but nothing fancy. I feel like luxury items are sort of pointless, you know?”
AMPA freshman Solomon Martin also shared a selfless sentiment for what he would do with a billion dollars. “I think I’d buy my mom a house and some other stuff since I feel like she deserves it for taking care of me,” he said.
Sebastian and Solomon said that having money wouldn’t change much for them, and neither would losing money.
“I’d focus on getting help from my friends and family so I could get back on my feet,” said Sebastian. “I feel like all people deserve respect regardless of class.”
