This Monday, the Hami girls’ tennis team faced Fairfax High for a tough match at Alexander Hamilton High’s tennis courts. The match ended in a victorious win for the Yankees, with both singles and doubles securing the win—averaging a 6:2 match rate. After swinging their rackets and keeping their eyes on the prize, Hami was happy their efforts paid off in the long run.
Doubles player Camila Bautista-Lopez, an SAS junior, gave some of her insight on what helped her prepare and get through these challenging matches. “I just think to myself that once I go through the next game it’ll be fine; I’m trying to just shake out that feeling of dread I have due to the pent-up anxiousness I can get.”
The Hamilton girls’ tennis match was an overall wonderful success, bringing a competitive but positive ambiance on and off the court. The girls luckily had a great start and always kept the score up by 15-0, and though getting a little rocky towards the high points with out of bounds, we were luckily able to get back on our feet and score every round played. Fairfax was putting in a great effort, but our team was on a roll and continued putting up higher numbers.

While the matches were going in Hami’s favor, students, friends, and families came to support the team, cheering on as we kept up smoothly. Everyone there was following the ball with hawk vision just to see what the results of the match would be and screamed with encouragement when needed.
The girls’ tennis coach, Mr. Gaiter, gave his final words of encouragement to the girls afterwards as well. “Every match becomes fuel to make the next one ten times better.” And gave us his advice on how he helps advance the team, saying, “… having them play practice matches that can help them start to realize the flaws in their plays is always a useful way to make them prosper in their plays.”
