I view feminism as seeing men and women as equal, one is not above the other. However, feminism is flawed—it always has been. Luckily, it also evolves.
For many years, women have worked from home, cooking, cleaning, and raising children. Women are human; their opinions, wants, and needs are just as important as men’s. Many fought to earn the right to choose, having a chance to live the way they want. The main focus of feminism was protecting women. However, many times, people hurt others trying to help themselves. I feel that one thing people fail to see is that men aren’t the enemy.
Being completely dependent on someone is dangerous. Being a stay at home wife was dangerous, as said by FunkyFrogBait, “At best, the trad wife lives her life comfortably in a gilded cage. At worst, she’s caught in a death trap”.
FunkyFrogBait is a content creator, and their videos range from 30-second shorts to 30-minute videos about societal issues in a comedic way. Their video, “The TRAD WIVES of TikTok” touches on the topic of feminism. One point is “historically, the movement has excluded people of color……as well as LGBTQ+ voices,” being an actual criticism of feminism.
My favorite part of the video is when they show TikToks/shorts where they say they aren’t feminist, giving reasons that are confusing. Why would your ability to cook exclude you from being a feminist? Isn’t the work women do regardless of a paycheck important? They make me wonder, what do they think feminism is?
In recent years I’ve seen a rise of people on social media who claim feminists hate men. I can’t say I agree. Unfortunately, there are still men who take advantage of and hurt women. For that reason, feminism is a movement based on protecting and encouraging women. Using feminism as an excuse to treat all men as if they have personally wronged you by existing isn’t just wrong—it undermines the point of feminism. Its core is protecting and encouraging women, not tearing down men.
People who claim feminists hate men don’t understand feminism.
