As the Los Angeles City Section playoffs quickly approach, Hamilton Yankees take time to reflect on last week’s game against Venice High School.
The nail-biting event ended with the Yankees triumphing, finishing off with a tight score of 28-27. Ending in double overtime, it marked the first time in 10 years the Yankees defeated the Gondoliers.
BITA junior Kevin Gutierrez (#49) expressed his joy about Friday’s win. “It felt amazing, man. The last game of the season, against one of our rivals [made it] even crazier.”
Hamilton’s football team has been putting in many extra hours on and off the field. Focusing on fundamentals during practice has helped the team forge their way through the season.
“It was the best game I’ve been a part of,” says Hamilton’s defensive coordinator Coach Campbell. “It was a great way to end the regular season and come in with momentum for the playoffs.”
Looking ahead, Hamilton is set to play Gardena High School for the first round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs. While preparing for the game, the team’s main goal is to be alert on defense.
“[Gardena’s] a pretty physical team, so we just got to master their physicality. We got to make sure that we wrap up on defense tackle, and then offensively we have to come out fast and start fast,” says Coach Campbell.
Overall, the team is feeling optimistic about tonight’s game. “I’m ready. … Ready to play for the second round and get to the championship,” says CAA freshman Le’kai Morgan (#14).
