Senior year is often described as the “best year of high school.” Movies, social media, and even teachers build it up to be a time full of fun events and unforgettable memories. But, perhaps for many students, the reality feels a lot different.
Yes, there are moments that live up to the excitement—-football games, senior events, prom, and, of course, graduation getting closer. There’s also something special about spending your final year with people you’ve grown up with or gotten closer with. Those everyday moments—laughing in class, and spending nutrition and lunch together—start to feel more meaningful when you realize they won’t last forever.
At the same time, senior year can feel overwhelming. Between college applications, financial aid, deadlines, and the pressure of figuring out your future, it’s not always as fun as people make it out to be. For some students, it can even feel like being stuck in a loop—waking up, going to school, repeating the same routine over and over again. I even tell myself, “I’m honestly just here for attendance and to spend the last moments with my friends until we go our separate ways.”
That feeling isn’t uncommon. As motivation starts to drop and “senioritis” starts, many students find themselves emotionally checked out. The excitement of finishing school is there, but so is the stress and exhaustion that comes with it. Just being present as much as you can is what makes it worth it.
So, is senior year fun or stressful? The answer is to expect to feel both. It’s a mix of pressure, boredom and overall memories. In the end, this last year is still a chapter that matters.
