Just as rain hit L.A., Sabrina Carpenter’s Short and Sweet Tour also hit L.A.’s Crypto Arena. Los Angeles was Carpenter’s last stop on a tour spanning over a year around the world. I was fortunate enough to be able to go to her second show on November 17th, and if you like her on the radio, then I strongly suggest seeing her live.
If you happen to be living under a rock, Sabrina Carpenter has become one of the “It Girls” of the pop world. Though she has been performing and acting since 2011 with a lead role on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, Carpenter really broke into the music scene with her album emails i cant send and was then boosted even higher by her hit single Espresso on the album Short and Sweet.
The Crypto Arena was decked out in Sabrina imagery with blue and white accents. Fans of Carpenter were dressed to the nines. Carpenter’s concert aesthetic has been one of the highlights of the tour. At the start of the concert, she comes out wrapped in a bath towel which is then opened to reveal a bejeweled bodysuit—custom made by Victoria’s Secret—with standard color palettes: baby blue, pink, black and white, and a Peep yellow. But sometimes she switches it up with different designs: leopard print, the New York City skyline, and for the first night in L.A., a Hollywood themed bodysuit. There were many bodysuits adorning concert goers, along with go-go boots and lipstick kisses.
The aesthetic goes along with the retro vibe the Short and Sweet Tour presents. Throughout the concert, audience members got snippets of comedic infomercials and screengrabs that relate back to her and her songs.
But of course the main event was Sabrina herself. After two openers (Amber Mark and Rayvn Lenae), she comes out at 9:00 and puts on a high energy performance. Her vocals were smooth and mixed well in the space, though some complained of the bass being too loud. The audience is in on the joke as she sings about manchildren and people being dumb and poetic. She brings them into a world that is shiny, fun, and upbeat. Audiences looked forward to seeing her “arrest” celebrities—SZA, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Joe Keery, and Miss Piggy—for being too hot, as well as what the surprise song of the night would be.
The concert ended around 11. After a high energy performance, the audience leaves as clips of Sabrina saying goodbye to everyone who came. Though her tour is over now, I highly recommend checking out clips online, as well as keeping an eye out for her next tour or album. Because if Short and Sweet was anything to go by, Sabrina Carpenter is definitely a busy woman.
